Ebook About In the tradition of Zadie Smith and Marlon James, a brilliant Caribbean writer delivers a powerful story about four people each desperate to escape their legacy of violence in a so-called "paradise." In Baxter’s Beach, Barbados, Lala’s grandmother Wilma tells the story of the one-armed sister. It’s a cautionary tale, about what happens to girls who disobey their mothers and go into the Baxter’s Tunnels. When she’s grown, Lala lives on the beach with her husband, Adan, a petty criminal with endless charisma whose thwarted burglary of one of the beach mansions sets off a chain of events with terrible consequences. A gunshot no one was meant to witness. A new mother whose baby is found lifeless on the beach. A woman torn between two worlds and incapacitated by grief. And two men driven into the Tunnels by desperation and greed who attempt a crime that will risk their freedom – and their lives. How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House is an intimate and visceral portrayal of interconnected lives, across race and class, in a rapidly changing resort town, told by an astonishing new author of literary fiction. One of 2021's Most Anticipated New FictionThe Millions * Lit Hub * O Magazine * Elle.com * Entertainment Weekly * Minneapolis Star-Tribune * BustleBook How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House: A Novel Review :
Synopsis: In a small beach town in Barbados, Wilma tells her granddaughter Lala a cautionary tale about the one-armed sister; it’s meant to ensure girls listen to their mothers & not explore the dark Baxter tunnels. Now grown, Lala lives on the beach with her husband Adan, a well-known thief with deep issues. One night, Adan’s small time criminality takes a dark turn creating a chain of events no one can escape. A witness left behind, a new mother grieving after the lifeless body of her baby is found on the beach...a confrontation in the very tunnels mothers warns their daughters about. Told from multiple perspectives in a nonlinear timeline, How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House is a powerful exploration into grief, old & new traumas, and the dimming light of hope for freedom from a dark past.Review: Wow. This book just sort of leaves you speechless/breathless. There are so many distinct points where you find yourself crying, gasping for air, or screaming in anger. Be prepared for an emotional journey when reading this one; have tissues, chocolate, and a stress ball on standby.Cherie Jones presented the world a group of characters with immense humanity, complex emotions, and heart-wrenching traumas that unfold before the readers eyes. It was impressive how Jones wove the long-lasting consequences family dynamics have on future generations into the story. She gave such heart to each character; the reader will truly feel connected & invested in their outcomes. I was especially conflicted trying to process the dynamics between Lala & Wilma, Lala & Adan, and Lala & Tone. I didn’t know my heart could break & fuel anger at the same time. But, the perseverance & strength Jones incorporated into Lala’s character was phenomenal. No matter the trauma she witnessed and experienced, she had a determination to push forward; she kept her hopefulness toward a future that was largely new & unknown. This was a powerful read that I feel I can’t do justice to in a simple review. Read this book!!! Great story! Recommend to others. Compelling and colorful dialogue. Some may be offended by language. Fast read. Buy this book!
